Challenge

The feature film Detective Byomkesh Bakshy (2015), directed by Director Dibakar Banerjee, required recreating this street pictured alongside (photographs provided by the client). The matte painting was initially recreated for a test pitch and then detailed for the final shot used in the feature film.

Solution

For this, I travelled to the Calcutta today (Kolkatta, India), to photograph textures that would aid our efforts of recreating buildings & streets that no longer exist. Subsequently, a team of us matte painters, spent months detailing the matte painting alongside the VFX crew. Included alongside are frames from the green screen shoot and the final projected, matte painting shot.
